Please join the MIT Enterprise Forum of Dallas / Fort Worth for an evening of TECHworking, a networking event for technology entrepreneurs, businesses and supporters.

This month’s event will feature a brief oral introduction to the law by our featured guest. After that, visitors are free to mingle with the crowd and get their specific questions answered from the featured guests.

On September 16th 2011, a bill was signed into law that fundamentally changed the US patent system. Forbes Magazine calls this law “trouble for tech entrepreneurs”. The most important change this law caused was moving the US from a “first to invent” to a “first to file” system. (Forbes Article)

Small and start-up companies will now have to compete with the financial and legal strength of large and established multi-national companies when trying to protect their innovative and revolutionary designs.

What to know what this law means for your company? How about for your clients and investors?

Want more? First drink of the night is compliments of the Forum!

This month’s TECHworking event is at The Quarter Bar in Uptown Dallas. The Quarter is a cozy local hangout with a wonderful French Quarter ambiance. Join us in our reserved area or on the rooftop deck overlooking McKinney Avenue. This will be the perfect opportunity to meet fellow entrepreneurs, network with local businesses, and get involved with MITEF!

Featured Guests:

Louis Goldish – Senior Venture Advisor

Lou Goldish is primarily responsible for intake of new ventures at VMS. He was a founder and Managing Director of the consulting firm Data and Strategies Group and spent 35 years as a management consultant to corporations offering industrial, commercial, and technology based products and services. Prior to joining VMS he was Relationship Manager for a leading supplier of management software for very large databases and data-based enterprise systems. Goldish received a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Case Institute of Technology and M.S. degrees in both Mechanical Engineering and Management from MIT.

From the MIT webpage about VMS:

The MIT Venture Mentoring Service (VMS)

VMS supports innovation and entrepreneurial activity throughout the MIT community by matching prospective entrepreneurs with skilled volunteer mentors. We use a team mentoring approach with groups of 3 to 4 mentors sitting with a fledgling entrepreneur(s) in sessions that provide practical, day-to-day professional advice and coaching. VMS mentors are selected for their experience in areas relevant to the needs of new entrepreneurs and for their enthusiasm for the program. Mentors are required to subscribe, in writing, to a Statement of Principles that govern their behavior, outline their responsibilities, guard against conflicts of interest, and control financial involvement with the entrepreneurs and their ventures. Relationships between mentors and entrepreneurs are formed based on the needs of the entrepreneur and the interests of available mentors.

VMS assistance is given across a broad range of business activity, including product development, marketing, intellectual property law, finance, human resources, and founders issues. VMS services are offered without charge to MIT students, alumni, faculty and staff in the Boston area.

VMS complements and works cooperatively with the many MIT centers and programs promoting entrepreneurship and providing many resources to encourage formation of businesses and to move technological knowledge from the laboratory to the marketplace.

Space is limited, so please register right away.

Managing OS across state lines—Are Reps and Warranties good here, there, or anywhere?

Working with your attorney to manage OS Compliance

He completed additional studies in international law at Oxford University, England, & the Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara.

Nick Lawrence has been using open source software almost exclusively for business and technical work for nearly twenty years. He will discuss:

Why should you be interested in open source?

Do you have to be a geek?

What software is available for the office?

How do you get started using open source?

Where do you get help?

What are its benefits and risks?

Why use an open source solution?

What open source cloud computing systems are available?

March Event: SBIR Workshop.

March 27, 2010, 9:30am-3:30pm

SOM 1.508, UT Dallas

$25. Lunch included.

1-Page Flyer (PDF)

Workshop Slides (PDF)

During its multi decade lifetime, the Federal Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program has poured tens of billions of dollars into small high tech firms. Have you received your fair share? Would you like to learn how?

Last October, we offered our first SBIR Workshop. The event was quickly over-subscribed. Now it’s back, with room for more participants. This time, we’ll cover both kinds of Agencies, ones such as DoD that issue contracts, and ones such as NIH that mainly issue grants.

Many SBIR conferences discuss the SBIR program itself, and why you should be interested. Our SBIR Workshop teaches you what it takes to win grants and contracts, how to navigate the Federal “red tape,” how to conduct your project, and how to leverage a Phase I win into Phase II follow-on work, Phase III “sole source” procurements, and beyond.

If you have a high tech idea that could turn into a business, and you’d like to get as much as $100,000 or more of essentially “no strings attached” money to try out your idea, then this SBIR Workshop is for you. If your idea pans out, you could get another $750,000 to turn it into a product. And you end up owning outright the product, its intellectual property, and the company. Not a bad deal, huh?

Even with more room this time, we expect the SBIR Workshop to fill up quickly.

There is one key reason that Silicone Valley is the epicenter of launching innovative companies, thus creating massive numbers of jobs and creating massive amount of wealth.

The simple reason is that there is in place already very single non-core support component and/or service needed to launch a new company which offers a sustainable competitive advantage over existing providers in that industry.

Thus, all that an entrepreneur needs is a vision of the elegant and optimum solution to an under-served market, for which there would be pent-up demand for a superior product/service to those that they need or have to put up with currently.

They have IP law firms, accounting firms, contract manufacturing, angels and VCs, companies with in place global distribution infrastructure, uber-scalable entrepreneur office/warehouse facilities ( the term for this escapes me at the moment ), PR professionals, uber-scalable staffing companies which handle all the employee benefit and administrative minutia which can drag a new company owner under with its mind-boggling detail, and a lot of interaction facilitating infrastructure.

This could easily be replicated in the DFW Region, and thus we could surpass Silicone Valley as the epicenter of innovation, given the self-destruction mode of the California government, which has public policy leading to the extinction of its business sector and the enormous costs of operating there.

California’s trajectory from a ) paying its firemen annual retirements of over $200,000, b ) its Prop 13 which causes Warren Buffett to pay more in ad valorum taxes on his orange shag carpeted home in Omaha, NE than on his ocean-front cottage in La Jolla, CA, c ) draconian cuts in its higher education and public secondary and elementary schools budgets, d ) the enormous home costs that a newly hired creative class human capital asset would have to pay on top of his/her mid six figure student loans, e) the unbelievably unshakable ( almost ) pit bulls at the California Franchise Tax Board, who seek to tax the air one breathes,

f ) the California Coastal Commission which can defer start of construction on a production facility until the next decade with its red tape unsurpassed by any bureaucracy on earth and absolute authority, g) the massive challenge of air travel scheduling to most parts of the country from having few east-bound commercial flights departing after 6pm, h) the legal framework which allows propositions with insane consequences to business easily becoming law of the land, and finally i) the horrific condition of the air and gridlocked traffic as well as the availability of water on the tipping point of collapse.

Other that, it is a pretty nice place.

Given the enormous complexity and costs an entrepreneur faces at getting her/his company off the ground in California, as well as the constraints on cash and time for a start-up with meteoric growth, many would choose the DFW Region as far more business friendly and a better place to grow one’s business.

I would suggest that the MIT Enterprise Forum might provide the leadership to build a coalition along with the established North Texas Commission to move the epicenter of innovation to the Central Time Zone where we have unmatched airline connections to the nation and to the world and very few weather shutdowns.

MIT Enterprise Forum DFW Chapter started 2010 with the January event: Effective Pitching. We wanted to provide entrepreneurs a well-rounded view of how to pitch to investors and how to handle sales in a Sales 2.0 age. Jeff Crilley shared great tips about how to pitch to journalists and get free publicity. With real life examples drawn from his career, Jeff offered valuable and practical information for entrepreneurs.

We plan to post video clips from the event soon. Here are some resources that entrepreneurs can benefit from.

Here’s the program summary.

Here’s a recently published story from Dallas Morning News about DFW entrepreneur Alexander Muse (known for the ShopSavvy app). Alexander was one of speakers at the MIT EF DFW Bootstrapping event in 2009. Alex hosts happy hours on first Mondays of the month at Infomart.

Unconventional describes Alexander Muse.

He thinks big and – for the most part – it has paid off.

He helped start a half-dozen technology companies in Dallas – with creative names such as MotorSport Ranch and Big in Japan – since the late 1990s. He sold three of them for tens of millions of dollars; he still runs the others.

LayerOne, a telecommunications infrastructure company he started in 1999, went bankrupt. Muse raised $4 million in venture capital to buy back the assets and relaunch the company. He sold it to Switch & Data for $22 million on Sept. 12, 2001.

“I was supposed to sign the deal on Sept. 11. That was so scary. I had a newborn baby, a big new house and a Porsche. I thought, ‘If this doesn’t happen, I could lose it all,’ ” said Muse, 38. “We ended up making a lot of money, but we lost a lot of money for a lot of people. That was a turning point for me.”

Early on, Muse named himself CEO of all his ventures. But he learned his attention span was limited to about two years.

“I’m more effective being part of a leadership team than the leader,” he said.

Now he finds partners to incubate ideas at Architel, an IT outsourcing company he started in 2001. If successful, they’re spun off with a CEO who has an equity stake in the company.

Muse focuses on Architel and ShopSavvy, a cellphone application that lets users scan a product’s bar code to compare prices online and at local stores. Revenue reached $11.5 million at Architel and $1 million at ShopSavvy in 2009. Both turn a profit.

With a foosball table and a giant Incredible Hulk at his Dallas Infomart office, Muse created a fun place to work as well as a nurturing environment for budding entrepreneurs. He shares spare office space, invests in promising ideas and holds monthly happy hours where he foots the bar tab.

In 2005, Muse launched the Texas Startup Blog and co-founded SpringStage in 2008 as an online network to promote local entrepreneurship.

An avid blogger, Muse writes about his adventures, attracting at least 175,000 online followers. Soon, he plans to start a blog called the Startup Muse.

Next? Muse wants to develop apps that integrate social networks with services.
